WEBINAR: FROM CRISIS TO HOPE

21.09.2023

SOCIAL WORKERS FROM ARMENIA ARE ORGANIZING A WEBINAR FOCUSING ON THE CHALLENGES OF HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT TO THE VICTIMS OF WAR IN BLOCKADED ARTSAKH (NAGORNO KARABAKH)

  • When - 27 September 2023, 17.00 CET Time
  • How -  Registration is mandatory!
  • Working language - English

The aim of the webinar is to create contact and networking between Armenian social workers and European colleagues who might be potential resources in the current situation.

The situation in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) has been a matter of international concern and attention.

Since December 12, 2022, Azerbaijan has been illegally blockading the Lachin corridor: the only road that connects the Republic of Artsakh with the outside world. The ongoing blockade is essentially a death sentence for the 120,000 Armenian civilians, including 30,000 children, 20,000 elderly, and 9,000 persons with disabilities living in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh). In the afternoon of September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched a full-scale assault against Nagorno-Karabakh, shelling and targeting civilian infrastructure.

The war in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) has not only political and security implications for the region but also a significant humanitarian crisis with the aim of ethnic cleansing. Caught in the middle of war, people suffer different types of loss, and displacement.

Social workers in Armenia have been addressing these challenges for ten months now in supporting starving children, pregnant women, the elderly, disabled people and others because of the total blockade.

Social workers face significant challenges when meeting the needs of people and communities affected by war and conflict. These challenges include dealing with trauma and mental health issues, providing assistance to displaced and homeless, ensuring access to basic necessities such as food and healthcare, addressing family separation, navigating legal and immigration issues, protecting children, practising cultural sensitivity, managing limited resources, addressing security concerns, and assisting with long-term reintegration.

The webinar is organized by the Armenian Association of Social Workers to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, best practices, and experiences related to the role of social workers in responding to the needs of people affected by the recent military aggression in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

In this webinar, you have the opportunity to meet social workers who work directly with people affected by war.

Here are some key points that the webinar will cover:

  • Challenges and Needs: Discuss the specific challenges and needs of people in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), including issues related to displacement, trauma, healthcare, education, and livelihoods.
  • Role of Social Workers: Exploring the crucial role that social workers play in addressing these challenges, providing psychosocial support, and helping people and communities rebuild their lives.
